One of my favorite manga out there is Kore Yamazaki’s Ancient Magus Bride. This fantasy manga tells the story of Hatori Chise, a young girl who can see spirits. Her life as a child with this ability has been beyond difficult with her mother’s suicide and her father’s abandonment of the family. In an act of desperation, she sells herself into slavery, which apparently is a thing. But it’s not a normal type of slavery, but instead a market for people who are interested in other people, beings and things with magical powers. This is where she comes into the possession of Elias Ainsworth, the titular ancient magus. Elias wants Chise to teach him what it’s like to be a human while he teaches her what it’s like to be a mage. I’ve recapped each volume below for those who need a refresher on what happens in the story as the volumes are spread out pretty far. Enjoy!
