Angel & Devil

We did this for opening 26, let’s do the same for opening 27. We’ll have a look at what it shows us and what little hidden things are in this opening. Be aware that this post will be filled to the brim with spoilers for the remainder of the Egghead Island arc, so read this at your own discretion.

We open on Bonney’s hand, signifying different phases in her life. We know that Bonney went through quite a lot in a short amount of time and carries a lot of trauma with her. We then see a close up of her face – in her adult form – with a younger Kuma doing the Nika pose reflected in her eyes, reminding us that seeing Nika is a dream of both Kuma and Bonney. It’s no coincidence that the shot then moves on to show Luffy before showing the rest of the crew as well as the different Vegapunks in a few rapid fire shots. We see the Straw Hats in their Egghead attire walking casually through town before we return to Bonney.

I posted this image in a previous post as well, but that reflection is fantastic. I also thought that the very first time we saw Bonney, that was macaroni. Don’t judge.

Bonney’s backstory isn’t complete without first looking at Kuma’s backstory, and that is exactly what this opening does. We see a young Kuma, Ivankov and Ginny with targets painted on their backs while both St. Saturn and St. Garling are menacingly present in the background of the shot. We then see the same cast after they’ve joined up with the revolutionaries. We see an older Ginny and Kuma living happily in their little church as Bonney grows up before our eyes until we see her in the present once more with Imu’s watchful eye hanging above her, uncertain about what she should be feeling. This part of the opening gets capped off by a shot of Akainu – presumably as he faces off against Kuma at the top of the Red Line as well as the revolutionary army looking at Kuma who has just disappeared.

Loving the casual outfits on Egghead

We then return to the Straw hats with York and Stella first appearing before a rift opens up between them, signifying York’s betrayal of the other Vegapunks. The rift is torn open by a gear 5 Luffy who is then seen fighting Kizaru after the admiral takes down Sentoumaru. We get a few more shots of a young Bonney as well as one of Dragon looking at a wanted poster of his son. Their reunion is probably near and although Luffy has very little care about his father, I wonder what the reunion will look like. They’re both on the same side of history but one cares deeply about fixing the world while the other wants to fix the wrongs within sight but nothing beyond that, just caring about being free.

Break open that rift and bring forth the new dawn

We get a gorgeous shot of a young Bonney getting a piggyback ride from Kuma before we get to see the crew on the Sunny a few more times with Bonney alongside them. I’d say this opening – when it comes to foreshadowing and visual splendor – is a step down from Us, but that opening was in such a league of its own that it’s almost impossible to go beyond that. I’d say it’s still a great opening with many great visuals, giving us enough insight into Bonney and Kuma without spoiling anything that’s going to happen on Egghead itself. I wonder if we’ll get another opening before the Egghead arc is over since there are many big events about to happen that aren’t visible in this opening. Perhaps one for the end of Egghead and the early stages of the next arc, but we’ll see.

Speaking of fights that were heartbreaking, Sentomaru being such an honorable guy was very fun to see. He was very goofy on Sabaody, and I’m glad he stayed that way.

As for the music, the band who does the song is called Gre4n Boyz but was until recently named Greeeen. They’re known for being fully anonymous as well as every single member having a dentistry license. That’s a fun fact you probably didn’t expect. Me neither when I looked them up. They’ve been around for quite a while, the new name only going into effect in 2024. Either way, it’s a very pleasant sounding song that fits the opening well. I’m keeping this one a bit short since there’s not much more to say. Thanks for reading.

I cannot stress enough how much I love this flashback. It’s heartbreaking.
